Avon Lake's Rich History
Avon Lake got its start along the shore of Lake Erie in the early 1800s, when Adam Miller and his family settled by the water in 1819. The wider area was organized as Avon Township in 1824. In 1915 the township split, and the piece north of the railroad tracks became Avon Lake. For a while the lakeshore was a real draw. The Lake Shore Electric Railway ran an interurban line out here, and its Beach Park stop and car barn, built in 1897, made the beach an easy day trip from Cleveland. In 1926 a large coal-fired power plant went up on Lake Road right along the water, and it ran for decades before coming down in the early 2020s. Avon Lake became a city in 1960.
