Beachwood started out as part of Warrensville Township, and it took its name from the beech trees that once filled the area. The spelling shifted from "Beechwood" over the years. Residents voted to break away and incorporate as their own village on June 26, 1915, back when only about 151 people lived here. For decades it stayed small and quiet. The population climbed from a few hundred in 1940 to more than nine thousand by 1970, and Beachwood earned city status in 1960 as the new homes and families arrived.
