North Royalton's Rich History
North Royalton started out as Royalton Township, one of 18 Cleveland-area townships platted for the Connecticut Land Company. It was established in 1818, and an early settler named it after his old hometown of Royalton, Vermont. Sometime in the 1880s the name became North Royalton, since another Ohio town already claimed the original. For most of the 1800s this was farm and dairy country. The village incorporated in 1927, became a city in 1961, and grew quickly after World War II as families moved out from Cleveland. It's one of the few Cuyahoga County cities that still holds the exact shape of the original township.
